When it comes to finding the right home theater sound, there’s almost an endless array of choices, but if you’re a Sonos enthusiast it comes down to just two products. The Sonos Playbar, a soundbar that has been around for years, and the Sonos Beam, a new, more compact soundbar that sports the latest in voice assistant and home automation technology. The two have a lot in common, due to the way that Sonos components work so well together. Each soundbar has his own particular strengths. But which one is right for you?
Many of us don’t have an unlimited budget, so price certainly matters. The Sonos Playbar will run you $699 while the Sonos Beam Cost $399. You ask why is there a $300 price difference, Well the Playbar is a full-fledged home theater soundbar. It sits at 35 inches wide and boasting a total of nine drivers each with its own dedicated digital amp, The Playbar makes no compromise when it comes to filling a room with the cinema sound you would expect. The Sonos Beam, on the other hand, is more compact and takes on a more soundbar formula. Sitting at 25 inches wide and with only diver drivers and amps.
With that being said the Sonos Beam seems to be more attractive choice for those looking to save a few bucks but you have to keep in mind that you are not going to get the same sound from a cheaper soundbar as you would with the Playbar. With the Playbar having more drivers that normally would mean that in terms of sounds it would deliver a wider range of frequencies, at higher volume levels and with more effective virtual surround sound. The beauty with Sonos is you can add to your collections, going with the Sonos Sub, and set of Play 1, Play 3 or even a Sonos One speaker to create a 5.1 Surround sound set-up.
If you are looking for a smart speaker product, the Sonos Beam beats out the Playbar as the beam supports that feature where you can run either the Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant directly from the speaker but the playbar does not have that feature built-in.
Overall, based on all components I would say that the Sonos Beam is better than the Sonos Playbar. It’s cheaper, it can do voice control, and it’s got future-proof connections. But of course, it’s not always as simple as it seems because some people might just want better audio from their TV. If you are looking at a Sonos product, you have to consider the room you are putting it in and the exact functionality you looking to get from it. At the end of the day, you really can’t go wrong with either of these soundbars.
