Google Pixel 4XL debut

With all the major players in the phone industry already have launched there phones it is finally time for the Google pixel to debut. The first thing that you will notice is that the back of the device is one solid color, unlike all the previous models. The fingerprint sensor has also been removed since the pixel has moved to facial recognition. I’m a bit upset about this because I tend to use my fingerprint scanner more than facial recognition especially in low lit areas like when I’m lying in my bed. The notch has been removed from this year’s model and kinda gives the top of the phone an old Galaxy s9 look which is a little disappointing since other phones have been moving towards a bezel-less screen. The bezel not only houses the Pixel 4 XL’s selfie camera but the sensors that power its new Motion that allows faster facial unlocking and gesture-based controls.

Google has always had basic looking phones that focus more on hardware and features, but this year they decided to live a little and besides giving us a basic white and black phone we got an Oh So Orange to get the few people that want to stand out with an orange phone. I personally love orange, but I can name a few other colors that would probably appeal to more customers like red, or blue

The XL has a 6.3-inch AMOLED screen with a 3040 x 1440 resolution. But to put the icing on the cake Google’s new phone has a 90-Hz refresh rate. It one-upped the one plus 7T and made the XL have a dynamic refresh rate in which means the phone automatically switches to a lower refresh rate when necessary to put less of a drain on the battery. With the refresh rate at 90-Hz scrolling around on the phone looks baby butt smooth. The Pixel fails in my opinion on brightness with it only being at 418 nits while the iPhone 11 hits 652 nits and the Samsung Galaxy S10 is at 611 nits.

When you look at the back of the device and view the camera it reminds me a lot of the iPhone 11 camera because it added an extra camera lens like the iPhone this year. It is made up of a 12.2-MP main lens with an f/1.7 aperture, augmented by a 16-MP telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture. That latter camera is capable of a 2x optical zoom, which is the same specs as the iPhone, Galaxy S10 and Note 10. you can get an 8x digital zoom without losing too much picture quality. Live HDR+ processes optimized photos in real-time which means you can see what they look like in the phone’s viewfinder before you shoot. The picture quality is very similar to the other competing devices until you zoom in. That is where the camera shines due to it having machine learning and artificial intelligence software to go with its hardware

Last year the Pixel 3 XL had a below-average time of 9 hours and 30 minutes and this year Google increased the size of the battery on the Pixel 4 XL, going with a 3,700 mAh battery to the 3,430 mAh. This years Pixel XL lasted 9 hours, 42 minutes compared to 8 hours with the standard Pixel

the Pixel 4 XL uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile processor which is the same as the Galaxy note’s. Benchmark tested showed the Pixel 4 XL produced a multi-core score of 2,582. That’s slightly better than the standard Pixel 4that received a score of 2,329 though it trailed the 2,640 score for the Galaxy Note 10. The iPhone 11 Pro hit 3,509 with the benchmark test, so the best-performing smartphones are still the ones being designed in Cupertino.

It’s the same story with graphics. The Pixel 4 XL actually outperformed the Galaxy Note 10 on 3DMark’s Extreme test, with a score of 5,806 to the Note 10’s 5,374. The iPhone 11 Pro outpaces both with a 6,163 score. All and all the Pixel 4XL is a worthy update to its previous version.
